WYKE REGIS WI - Record of the monthly meeting held on Thursday 13th Sept 2018 at 7pm

WELCOME
President Margaret welcomed 50 members. She thanked Jean Bartlett for the lovely flowers.

RECORD OF previous MEETING
There was only one amendment to the minutes form the July meeting; it is the NFWI who have their Annual Meeting at the BIC in Bournemouth next year, not the DFWI. After this change the record was agreed and signed.

MATTERS ARISING
  • There was feedback from members about different events which had happened over the summer.
  • The BBQ had nice weather and good attendance despite many people being away on holiday. The WRWI stall at Wyke Primary Federation fete had attracted a lot of attention, especially the ‘getting the marbles into the flowerpot’ challenge. The stall we hoped to have at the Wyke Fest in the Gardens was not so lucky and was cancelled due to the heavy rain.
  • We are looking into options for the Hi-vis jackets.

CORRESPONDENCE
National Federation (NFWI):
  • The National Federation has been meeting with the ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) Project committee who will send the WI a list of suitable projects which met the charitable aims of the WI for institutes to sponsor if they wish.
  • There was an action pack about Mental Health, 100 years of WI campaigning and Friendship Flowers which have been put on the relevant notice boards.
  • The 2019-20 subscription will be £42. The WIs and County Federations each get 50p of the £1 increase.

Dorset Federation (DFWI):
  • there are still spaces on some County events and a new Christmas Craft event near Wimborne. See the notice boards.
  • Ann Campbell is taking orders for extra DFWI Calendars. Put your name on her list and pay the money up front please.

Other:
  • There are several birthdays and anniversaries soon and cards were handed out for these events.

DFWI News –
  • On p5 there was a list of instructions/suggestions about financial matters which was read out to the members. This included the fact that any parties/transport to events must be paid by those members attending and not from WI funds.

TREASURER'S REPORT
Income:           £ 2,423.70       which includes the £1000 legacy from Iris Gibson which we used to buy the                                                           new piano
Expenditure:  £ 595.31          which includes the utilities.

SUB COMMITTEE REPORTS
Hall Management:
  • The external decorations have been completed. Fortunately the old sign above the door was in good enough condition to just be cleaned and put back up again. No scaffolding was needed which reduced the price from the original quotation.

Publicity:
  • The new Facebook page is up and running thanks to Joyce’s hard work. Please visit it to check what’ s on and ‘Like’ it. If you have any ideas for extra items and photos to put on Facebook or the WRWI website, please let Joyce or Do have them.

FUTURE EVENTS
  • There is a Beach Clean on Sunday 16th. Meet at Smallmouth Beach at 10am. We’’ll go for coffee at Billy Winters afterwards.
  • Please come and help at the refreshment stall at All Saints School on 22nd Sept. There will also be a display about WRWI to attract new members.
  • Do come to the annual programme planning meeting for 2019-20 on 24th Sept at 4pm. Bring ideas for speakers, etc.
  • We’re all set for the African Drumming event on 27th Sept. Includes cake.

  • Chesil Bank Group has their Raggy Wreath workshop on 25th October form 2-4pm. Bits and Bobs are demonstrating. Bring your own material – about 1 ½ metres. No exact cost from B&B yet, but wreath ring itself probably not more than a couple of pounds. Will put a list on the board to sing up.
  • Does anyone want to do anything this year for World Kindness Day on Tues 13th November?
  • The Autumn Fayre will be on Thurs 15th November. Could groups please sign up for a stall.

AOB FROM THE FLOOR
  • The Whist Group invite more members to come to their sessions on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm.
  • Iris Morris has a waiting list for the Chesil Bank Group trip to Haskins/Wimborne on 29th November. Leaving 9.30am from the Smugglers. Please bring the £6 cost to the October meeting.
  • The Brighton holiday has been cancelled as not enough people wanted to go.
  • The Isle of Man holiday has had to be cancelled as well, but this time because it was not possible to get an hotel. We’d need to book two years ahead!
  • Portland WI are the hosts of the Chesil Bank Group event next year. They are having a combined craft taster, ‘Pimms / Summer Punch’ and strawberry cream tea sometime in June from 2-4pm, £2.50.
  • The August and Sept coffee mornings were both very busy so a big thank you to everyone.
  • The Quiz group are meeting as usual on the last Weds of the month at 2pm. The group is not on the main programme but is at the top of the insert.
  • The Scrabble group meets next week at 2pm.
  • Jenny Samways asked if anyone would be interested in a Christmas lunch. Most groups do have their own Christmas lunches, so we do not usually organise a separate WRWI one due to the numbers involved. Jenni used to organise one for Rodwell WI at the Conservative Club in Weymouth. Four courses for around £15, which they thought was good value. Husbands and partners welcome. A show of hands showed that there was some interest in this, so if you would like to go, please bring a £5 deposit to the October meeting and see Jenni. Date to be decided.

NEXT MONTHLY MEETING - October
Our speaker will be from the Body Shop and give a demonstration/presentation of some of their products.
Hostess/ Flowers/Refreshments will not be provided by any particular group, but by volunteers who don’t belong to any group so don’t usually get the opportunity to do this. If that is you, please volunteer and let the committee know.

RAFFLE
Raffle prizes were won by  June Brock, Celia Stacey, Betty Marsh and Rosemary Smith.  It raised £ XX.

SPEAKER
Unfortunately our speaker, James Haddow, the taxi Driver poet was unable to join us this evening due to a family bereavement. He hopes to join us another time.

Kathy gave her delegate report from the NFWI Annual Meeting in Cardiff. She showed a short video on the NFWI Coat of Arms. Unfortunately the other videos about the 100 years of WI Campaigning and Walking Netball refused to work.

We have received a large kit bag filled with netballs which has been sent to us for our Walking Netball sessions. The regular sessions start on 21st Sept and will every 1st and 3rd Friday from 10-11am at Redlands Sports Centre. England Netball provide the coach for 20 weeks and the equipment and WRWI pays for the hire of the hall. This is £28 per session and is covered by asking each participant for £3 per session.

There was a slide show on the Suffragette parade in the carnival in August which several members were involved with.

Margaret also gave a slide show on the Platinum Blitz weekend which she and her daughter had been to at Denman over the summer. They made silver clay pendants and
.
