SPEAKER
We were joined this evening by James Haddow, the Taxi Driver Poet. As he arrived at the beginning of the meeting, he entertained us before the business. He regaled us with his poems, many of which were based on his life experiences. All were told with an amusing turn of phrase and provoked much laughter amongst the members. James had also brought copies of his poetry books and a display showing his poems with complimentary photographs. Once we had stopped laughing, Margaret thanked James very much for a very lively and fun-filled session.

MATTERS ARISING
- Toilet Twinning. We have voted for sponsoring a toilet in Nepal but this turned out to be unavailable so we chose the country with the next highest vote which was Malawi. We have now received a certificate and a framed photo of the toilet in Chibwana, Malawi. The photo will be hung in the ladies toilet.
- As time was short this evening, the question of photographs of the group secretaries for the notice board was postponed until the March meeting.
- The result of the voting for the NFWI Resolutions last month was: Bus services 13; Biosecurity 8; Trees/Menstrual Health/Smear 5 each; Pelvic Floor 3.
- We have a display tonight of the newspaper articles and the original poster for the events to raise money for a new HMS Dorsetshire in 1942. Many thanks to Ann and David May for doing a lot of research work on this interesting find.
- As Easter is so late this year, Pancake Day falls on the same day as the usual coffee morning (5th March), so we will do both. Margaret asked for helpers to serve on the day and to provide pancake batter. We need 10 pints in total – so don’t make 10 pints each! The timings will be 10-12.30.
- The Spring Fayre is on Thurs 28th March. Thanks to those groups who have signed up to run a stall, more are needed, so please consider this. Timing 11-1.30pm We will need soup and apples pies as usual. At the Autumn Fayre we had lots of apple pies left over but only just enough soup. Please see Rosemary about what we need.
- Committee 2019-20. We have had only one additional member signed up for the committee so far, but no offers to take over the Secretary role. Margaret stressed that the committee needs more people in order that its members are not overloaded with the tasks of running this large WI. In any case, without a Secretary, we will have to close as a WI.
- Penny is still looking for someone else to take over the scrapbooks.
- Kate Wheller has a petition re: the closure of Portland Hospital, but she is not here tonight. You can sign the petition at the Horticultural Society in Rylands Lane, Wyke Library or online. There is a meeting at the hospital next week to show support for keeping it open.
- The February coffee morning made £134.75.
National Federation (NFWI):
- Voting slips for the NFWI Board of Trustees. The details of each candidate are in your WI Life magazine, p.34-39. Please read through these as we will be voting to select up to 12 candidates at the March meeting.
- There will be a Great Food Debate Part II on March 8th from 10-3pm at the Langton Arms, Tarrant Monkton. Tickets cost £21 and include ‘a very good’ lunch. Please see Kathy if you would like to go.
- There is a Mental Health Matters event – ‘Celebrating Achievement and Planning the Future’ on Fri 10th Mat at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester from 10.15-1pm. Tickets are £4 per person. Please see Kathy if you would like to go.
- NFWI are partnering with the Bowls Development Alliance to run a national programme open to all WI members in England. Participants will et a 6 week FUN bowls programme at a local club. £3 per session. See yellow DFWI Info flyer – January 2019 on notice board if you are interested.

SUB COMMITTEE REPORTS
Hall Management:
- Margaret read out a report by Ann Pettifer. Thanks to everyone who took part in sorting out their items in the committee room and shed. The rubbish will be collected next week on 20th Feb.
- According to the instructions for the LINCAT boiler in the kitchen, this needs to stay on all the time, so please do not switch it off like we used to do. The water is hot enough to make tea, so we have removed the electric kettle from the kitchen. One of the pump-action hot drinks pots will stay on the kitchen counter for use as necessary. The others are in the shed.
- We have bought some new shelving for the shed, which arrives shortly. Groups will have the opportunity to store things on the shelves in neat boxes.
AOB FROM THE FLOOR

- June Brock asked for more Bric-a-Brac. Please clearly label it as ‘Bric-a-Brac’.
- Joyce North said that the Scrabble group needs a new leader from its next meeting. She and Ann P had been opening the hall for them as a stop-gap measure.
- Iris Morris asked people who had signed up for the day trip to Lacock to note if they are National Trust members. More participants are needed for a proposed trip to York on the last week in August. Only twin or double rooms are available now.
- Jenni Fleming reported back on the African Drumming session which had gone very well and even made a profit of £25, although this had not been the aim of the event.
- Althea is selling tickets for the next Singers’ concert in May.
